”I have never been more proud to be a Ukrainian”

American actress and mum-of-two, Mila Kunis has broken her silence about her country of birth by posting a video on her husband Ashton Kutcher’s Instagram account.

In the video, posted on March 4, the 38yo actress sits with her husband and starts with a brief back story, saying “I was born in Chernivtsi, Ukraine in 1983. I came to America in 1991. I’ve always considered myself an American.”

“A proud American. I love everything this country has done for myself and my family. But, today, I have never been more proud to be a Ukrainian.”

The couple could not help but by be moved by the evolving crisis, with Mila stating “The events that have unfolded in Ukraine are devastating. There is no place in this world for this kind of unjust attack on humanity.”

Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher rarely share photos of their children, and Mila doesn’t have a public social media account.

In support of his wife’s heritage, the 44yo actor acknowledged the “bravery of the people of the country that [Mila] was born in”.

“We’re raising funds to support a relief effort that will have an immediate impact and supply much needed refugee and humanitarian aid to the area.

“The principle challenge right now is logistics. We need to get housing and we need to get supplies and resources into the area,” Ashton told his IG followers.

The couple recently launched a GoFundMe to support the people of Ukraine and in the video Mila revealed that they would match “up to US$3m worth of donations to Airbnb.org and Flexport.org”.

According to the fundraiser, the freight transport company Flexport is organising shipments of supplies to refugee sites in Poland, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia and Moldova, while AirBnB is providing free, short-term housing to refugees fleeing Ukraine

Mila wrapped up the post by stating “The people of Ukraine are strong and brave but being strong and brave doesn’t mean you’re not worthy of support. We need to support the people of Ukraine.”

At the time of posting, Mila and Ashton’s GoFundMe is in excess of US$2,700,000, with the Ron Conway Family donating US$2,500,000 offline.

Mila and Ashton met on That 70’s Show in 1998 and, after rekindling their relationship in 2012, married in 2015. They have two children together, Wyatt Isabelle, their seven-year-old daughter, and Dimitri Portwood, their five-year-old son. Compared to a great many celebrity parents, the actors do not widely share their family photos across the internet.

They are strong advocates of their children getting the COVID vaccine when they are old enough.

“That’s what we were talking about. Yeah, it is [weird], because every day you’re like, ‘I hear it’s going to be approved by X date,’ and then it gets pushed and it gets pushed, and you hope that it’s getting pushed for the right reasons and not just because someone wants to put their name on it,” Mila told People.

Ashton added, “And who wants to be the parents that give their kid COVID and then gets their kid’s school shut down and keeps kids from being educated because they didn’t get vaccinated because the kid couldn’t get vaccinated.”
