Anne Hathaway on falling pregnant with baby number three: “We knew what we were doing”
The Devil Wears Prada star has announced she is expecting her third child with husband Adam Shulman, adding a new chapter to the family life she has kept mostly private over the years.
Sharing the news with her millions of Instagram followers in June, the 43-year-old revealed her growing baby bump in a sweet video set to Baby, I’m Yours, captioning the post with the same heartfelt words.
“Baby, I’m yours,” she wrote, as she revealed her bump by uncrossing her arms in the clip.
Anne and Adam, who married in 2012, are already parents to two sons: Jonathan Rosebanks Shulman, 10, and Jack Shulman, 6.
Now, Anne has reflected on her surprise at falling pregnant. Speaking on Late Night with Seth Meyers this week while promoting Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, the actress recalled just how shocked they were.
“Oh my gosh. It’s amazing. It’s amazing,” she said. “I mean, we knew what we were doing, but we were so shocked it worked.”
The Devil Wears Prada 2 star then laughed, “We were so shocked it went this way, so we’re calling this one our buzzer-beater.”
The announcement came shortly before photos emerged of the actress enjoying a family holiday in Saint-Tropez, where her baby bump was visible.
Anne has previously spoken about choosing to share her pregnancy news herself after photographers captured images of her while she was expecting.
“I saw someone was taking photos of me and I think at that point, people kind of knew I was pregnant,” she told People magazine.

Who is Anne Hathaway’s husband?
Anne Hathaway met her now-husband, Adam Shulman, in 2008 at the Palm Springs Film Festival. The pair would marry just a couple years later in 2012.
Adam Shulman is a fellow actor and producer, but also the co-owner of jewellery brand James Banks Design. As an accomplished jeweller himself, Adam worked on the design of his own engagement ring for Anne — how romantic!
The couple shares two sons. Welcoming Jonathon to the family in 2016, and Jack in 2019.
While notoriously private about her family life, Anne has since shared that her pregnancy journey wasn’t without it’s challenges.
Fertility challenges
It was only after Anne Hathaway revealed she was pregnant with her second son, that she also revealed her own fertility struggles.
‘I didn’t just wave a magic wand and be like ‘I want to be pregnant now. Oh, wow! It all worked out for me.’ It’s more complicated than that,” said the actress in an interview with The Associated Press.
Anne is known for keeping it light in her interviews, diverting questions into her family life with playful remarks.
While she did end up choosing a J-name for her first-born son, she joked on Jimmy Kimmel that she planned to call her son “Juandre” during the height of ridiculous celebrity baby names.
However, with the announcement of baby no. 2 on the way, Anne took a more sensitive approach in delivering the news. In a post to her Instagram, revealing her growing baby bump, the actress left a thoughtful note.
“For everyone going through infertility and conception hell, please know it was not a straight line to either of my pregnancies. Sending you extra love.”
Anne Hathaway on mum life
Anne Hathaway rarely discloses much about her sons beyond a few personal anecdotes, but it’s clear that the mum-of-two leads with humour.
According to Anne, her second-born son has a huge crush on animated Disney heroine, Moana, leading to an awkward but very sweet case of mistaken identity with Matthew McConaughey‘s Brazilian-American wife in Mauritius.
The actress also shared that much to her hilarity her first-born hates it when she sings — so a future career in the arts isn’t looking likely!
On The Devil Wears Prada 2 press tour, however, she has divulged how being a “boy mum” has shaped her day-to-day.
“I have to be able to go from a serious business meeting to a basketball court,” says the A-list actress, laughing. “I talk to other boy mums about this, you have to be able to play pick-up basketball at any point in any outfit.”
Although her life has undoubtedly changed since becoming a mother, Anne Hathaway also had some sage advice for first-time mothers while on her recent press run.
“You don’t have to hand in your person card when you pick up your baby,” the actress said, gesturing as if undergoing a bank transaction. “You’re still very much yourself.”
Choosing sobriety
Previously in 2024, Anne Hathaway also shared how becoming a mum influenced her decision to stay sober. At least for the next 18 years that is.
While she’s raising her sons in her household, Anne said she wanted to be present for them first and foremost and the way she was drinking ultimately didn’t allow space for that.
“He’s getting to an age where he really does need me,” she said of her first son Jonathon. “I did one school run hungover and that was enough for me.”
The actress also highlighted that the decision simply came about because she wanted to live a better life for her family; that you don’t have to hit rock bottom to choose sobriety.
