Brisbane mum’s baby born OUTSIDE the hospital
Welcome to the world!
Second (and third…) babies are often born faster than a firstborn, and for second-time mum Madhavi Leuke Bandara, there wasn’t enough time for her to get to hospital.
On the morning of 20 January 2022, 33-year-old Madhavi laboured at home from about 6am and just before she got in the car to head to hospital, her waters broke.
Then it was a quick dash for her and husband Shyam to drop their daughter Buvi at daycare before heading South Brisbane’s Mater Mothers’ Hospital.
But they got stuck in traffic and their son was couldn’t wait to be born!

But they got stuck in traffic and their son was couldn’t wait to be born!
Arriving at the Mater, nature took its course and Madhavi gave birth to a healthy son in the car park outside the hospital.
“It all happened so quickly,” she said. “Before I knew it, my husband actually caught the baby in the front passenger seat”, she told staff.
By the time the midwives reached the carpark, the healthy baby born had made his appearance.
Mater midwives Marine Pacquier, Carrie Simpson and Gabby Rowsell dashed to the car park to help Madhavi with her second birth, but the baby was already out when they got there.
Madhavi said later, “He was overdue – we were expecting him on 16 January but we are incredibly happy he is ok.”
