What are the different air purifier filters?

When choosing an air purifier for your child’s nursery, it’s easy to be confused by the different filters. Here’s a breakdown on what you need to know:

HEPA filters

HEPA stands for High-Efficiency Particulate Arresting. Still no idea? We hear you! What this means is that it’s really effective at trapping allergens in the air, making it a great choice if you live in a smoky area, in/near the city or if you have pets and/or allergies.

Ozone filters

Ozone filters help to remove odours but don’t remove allergens or other pollutants from the air.

Ionic filters

Ionic filters are suited to large spaces where small pollutants are present – so probably not ideal for your kid’s nursery, which is likely to be smaller.

Carbon filters

Carbon filters use activated charcoal to help clear smoke, chemicals, odours and gases from the air. They are often used together with HEPA filters as on their own they don’t remove allergens and bacteria.

Ultraviolet filters

Ultraviolet filters are ineffective against allergens, smoke, odours and chemical fumes, but instead work to kill bacteria and microbes in the air.

What size air purifier do I need?

When it comes to air purifiers for your nursery (or anywhere), size may be important. You want it to do its job effectively but you don’t want it ramping up your power bill! That said, some smaller, portable models can still be effective.

You need to know the rough size of the nursery (to calculate the floor areas, multiply the length by the width) and check the capacity on the product details.
