If you’ve ever bought artificial flowers and thought, why do these look so obviously fake?, you’re not alone. Straight out of the packet, they’re usually squashed, shiny and a little… sad.

But with one surprisingly simple hack that has gone viral on TikTok, you can transform a basic bunch into a full, natural-looking bouquet that genuinely passes for the real thing.

Perfect for a Mother’s Day gift that lasts long after fresh blooms fade, or for styling your home, parties or birthdays on a budget without sacrificing style.

Here’s how to take your faux flowers from flat to florist-worthy.

1. UNPACK AND SEPARATE

Artificial flowers straight out of packaging appear flattened and tangled. Remove the flowers from packaging and fully separate each stem.

Why it matters: They’re compressed for shipping – this resets the structure.

2. PREPARE BOILING WATER

Pour boiling water into a bowl or container.

Why it matters:Heat softens plastic – making it flexible enough to reshape.

3. DIP FLOWER HEADS ONLY

Submerge each flower head (not the entire stem) for 5-10 seconds.

Why it matters: Petals will begin to loosen almost immediately, and submerging the entire stem can loosen glue/damage the structure.

4. REMOVE AND IMMEDIATELY RESHAPE

Use fingers to reshape while the plastic is still soft. Gently rotate and ‘fluff’ the bloom, using fingers to open the petals outward. Repeat for each flower.

Why it matters: Petals are reshaped by hand while still warm and flexible. Plastic stiffens as it cools, locking in the new shape.

5. BUILD THE STRUCTURE

Floral foam is inserted into pot of choice. Begin inserting flower stems into floral foam. Start with the longest flowers to create the height and shape at the back of the arrangement. Use gardening clippers to adjust the height of the stems.

Why it matters: It’s important to space the flowers out at the start to create the base of the arrangement.

6. ARRANGE THE FLOWERS

Place remaining flowers in the arrangement, spreading colour and types throughout. Always step back and look at your arrangement from a distance.

Why it matters: This step is a trial and error – it may take a few tries to get the arrangement looking just right.

7. FILL IN THE GAPS

Once the flowers are in, fill in the gaps using the greenery.

Why it matters: This will break up the colours and add dimension, making your arrangement look all the more natural.

8. FLUFF IT OUT

Using your hands, fluff out the flowers and add any finishing touches.

Why it matters: Will give the arrangement a realistic, natural look.
