Mother’s Day in Australia
Mother’s Day was first celebrated in Australia in 1924, inspired by the American tradition. At first, it wasn’t widely recognised – Australians took a little while to warm to the idea – but over the years, it has grown into a cherished occasion to honour mums and show love and gratitude.
Even with its commercial side, Mother’s Day remains an important moment here in Oz to appreciate the mums and maternal figures in our lives. Whether you can get together or not, it’s always lovely to let mum know you care with a thoughtful gift, a card, or even just a heartfelt message.
How did Mother’s Day begin?
The idea of honouring mothers goes back to ancient civilisations, but the modern celebration started in the early 20th century in the United States.
Anna Jarvis, an American social activist, is widely regarded as the “Mother of Mother’s Day.” After her own mother passed in 1905, she campaigned for an official day to celebrate mothers—a tradition that quickly caught on.
Like in many countries, Mother’s Day in Australia became increasingly commercialised, with flowers, cards, and gifts becoming part of the celebration. Today, it’s officially recognised as a national occasion, celebrated every year on the second Sunday in May, following the American tradition.
