Teen skincare 101: What every parent needs to know

Navigating skincare with teens can feel tricky. From viral TikTok trends to fancy adult serums, it’s easy for parents to feel overwhelmed – and for teens to spend big on products they don’t actually need.

We spoke with Aaron Chatterley, Co-Founder and CEO of teen skincare brand, indu, about what really matters when it comes to keeping teen skin healthy.

From teen talk to a skincare start-up

Aaron’s journey started at home. “We’d just sold our previous business, a UK-based multi-brand beauty retailer called Feelunique, to Sephora in the summer of 2021,” he explains. “I was talking to my then 12-year-old daughters about skincare and what products and brands they were using, and one of them said those terrifying words: ‘Well, I saw on TikTok that if I start using retinols now I won’t get wrinkles when I’m 25.’”

Aaron laughs, but the concern was real. “I naturally told them this was CRAZY and that they should be using skincare products designed for teens. But they told me there weren’t any. Then came the gut-punch challenge: ‘Well, you’ve sold your business, you’ve got nothing to do now, so why don’t you start one?’ And so we did!”

Why age-appropriate, microbiome-friendly skincare matters

Teens are spending a fortune on adult skincare but it’s not always safe or necessary. Aaron explains: “Many adult skincare brands, while fantastic for adults, often contain ingredients that teens just aren’t ready for. At best, they’re unnecessary; at worst, they can be harmful and actually make their skin issues worse.”

This is where indu’s teen-focused, microbiome-friendly approach comes in, offering products that protect and support teen skin without overcomplicating things.

Making skincare teens actually want to use

Balancing teen desires with parental peace of mind was a major challenge from day one. “We had to design effective products, make sure they were teen-first and aspirational, and also acceptable to parents,” Aaron says.

To get it right, indu teamed up with top product formulators – the team behind many of Elemis’ hero products – and created a simple 3-step routine: Cleanse, Moisturise, Protect. Teens were involved from the start. “We created a teen committee, now over 100 strong, involved in everything from tone and branding to product development and user trials.”

Education is key

For Aaron, skincare is just one piece of the puzzle. “A good skincare routine is important, but it’s only part of healthy skin. Equally important are good sleep, nutrition, rest, and hydration. The best skincare products in the world won’t give you perfect skin if you ignore these other factors.”

Simple, effective, teen-friendly skincare

Aaron is proud of the simplicity of indu’s range. “Honestly, all of our products are perfect for teens. The range is super-simple: Cleanse, Moisturise, Protect. Unless your teen has a serious skin condition needing medical attention, this is all they need – plus sleep, nutrition, rest, and hydration of course!”

Parenting tips for navigating teen skincare

“From my own experience with my 16-year-old twin girls – don’t underestimate how important skin health is to them, but don’t sell them on skincare as a silver bullet. Teens often look for quick fixes, but teaching them a holistic approach, while not always the easy route, will definitely reap benefits in the long run.”
