Take your next family movie night to infinity and beyond.

Along with beloved characters Woody, Jessie and Mr Potato Head, we were first introduced to the bold and brawny spaceman Buzz Lightyear in 1995 with the release of Pixar’s animated film Toy Story.

And now after three more instalments within the Toy Story film franchise, Buzz – who is voiced by Chris Evans – is acquainting himself with a new generation of budding astronauts in spinoff animated movie Lightyear.

The highly anticipated film sees space ranger Buzz navigate the galaxy as he tries to find his way back home from a hostile planet while also trying to save the universe. Boy, talk about multitasking.

Is Lightyear related to Toy Story?

There’s been chatter about just how does Lightyear fit into the Toy Story franchise: is it a sequel, a prequel, a reboot? A spinoff may be the more technical way to put it but the fact is that Lightyear is the origin story for the Buzz Lightyear and is revealed to be the sci-fi adventure film that Toy Story’s Andy loved (and was subsequently gifted a Buzz Lightyear action figure). In short, Lightyear is somewhat of a meta spinoff, as it exists as its own film but also as a film within Toy Story in the Pixar universe.

Is Lightyear on Disney Plus?

Yes, Light Year has been available to stream on Disney+ from 3 August – meaning this weekend’s movie night with the kids is sorted! Disney+ will also be dropping other family-friendly titles like the live-action adaptation of Pinocchio and Cars on the Road on 8 September to celebrate Disney+ Day.
