As we head into the chaos that is Black Friday, Aussie families are gearing up for the usual mix of gift hunting, home upgrades and a dash of pre-Christmas practicality. But according to new research from Samsung Electronics Australia, it turns out many of us are also sneaking a quick look at the stars before tapping ‘checkout’.
Almost a third (31%) of Australians admit they’ve made a shopping decision based on astrological timing, and more than half (53%) say the cosmos has guided them at some point this year.
With so many choices to tick off before the holiday rush hits, it seems a little sprinkle of divine guidance might be playing a bigger role in our shopping habits than we ever realised.
Shopping in a Mercury Retrograde?
Financial behaviour expert and astrology enthusiast Emma Edwards explains why we might be feeling more influenced than usual: “This November, Black Friday falls in a Mercury retrograde, so your star sign could be influencing your shopping habits. As someone who’s used a horoscope as an excuse to treat myself, I get it. But don’t let the planets derail your budget, stick to your list, shop with a clear head, and set a ‘walk-away’ price before you buy.”

Each zodiac sign has its own way of hunting for the perfect deal. Geminis tend to be the planners, with nearly half (49%) preferring to map out their purchases and shop with practicality, a useful superpower during major sales. Leos, on the other hand, trust divine timing, with 19% saying they wait for the “right moment” and let the ideal offer come to them.
Both Scorpios (28%) and Aquarians (28%) admit astrology plays a big role in what ends up in their cart.

With a massive 93% of Australians planning to snoop or shop their way through the Black Friday sales, it’s shaping up to be a big weekend for bargain-hunters. Nearly half of us (47%) are even willing to spend up to five hours chasing down the right deal, because of course we are.
