Psy’s 2012 hit ‘Gangnam Style’ has had a 2022 edit and it’s kinda a banger!
You might want to volunteer for the next school disco, it's gonna be lit!
If hearing the words Gangnam Style has you instantly adopting the infamous pony ride dance position, you might be pleased to hear that Psy’s original version has, just this morning, received a 2022 update and it’s a doozy!
On Aussie radio station, Triple J’s Friday morning Like A Version segment, heavily adored Korean-Australian hip-hop group, 1300 (pronounced one three hundred) put their own stamp on the 2012 hit and our guess is it’s about to blow up the next school disco.
The five piece band, featuring producers Nerdie and pokari. sweat and vocalists rako, goyo and DALI HART managed to infuse Psy’s version with the the raw energy, K-hip-hop vibe that has seen them fast becoming one of Australia’s most popular acts, and we are her for it.
“Performing in Korean on a big platform like Like A Version means a lot to us”
Speaking about the cover, the band commented, “Gangnam Style made us many friends in 2012. Gangnam Style was the first Korean song that went around the whole world and put Korea on the map. We want 1300 to do that.
“Performing in Korean on a big platform like Like A Version means a lot to us. We don’t really think about it too much, but when we do, its pretty great.
“Its a blessing to speak the language we are more comfortable with, with the people who don’t speak our language still interacting with the stuff we make.”
Adored Korean-Australian hip-hop group 1300 covered the 2012 hit for Triple J’s ‘Like A Version’.
If recent history is anything to go by, combining kids music and Like A Version covers is a sure fire way to make a hit.
Earlier this year, the Wiggles took out the number one spot in the youth station’s annual Hottest 100 vote competition for their Like A Version cover of Tame Impala’s Elephant.
Anthony Field, Emma Watkins, Lachy Gillespie and Simon Pryce were joined by OGs, Murray Cook and Jeff Fatt to perform their own Like A Version of Tame Impala’s ‘Elephant’.
When asked how they were feeling Anthony answered: “Really great, Jeffy’s having a sleep, Muzza’s gettin’ the guitar ready.”
As for how they feel about their success and the longevity of the love from their fans, they’re grateful.
“You don’t go around thinking ‘We’re cultural icons’ or anything,” says Murray. “But I played with the DZ Deathrays at Splendour and the audience were all former Wiggles fans, because they were in their 20s.
“It’s great. I love it when people come up and say we were a big part of their childhood.”
