Pat Princi-Jones is the author of A Scented Life and aromatherapy specialist at leading Australian essential oil brand, Oil Garden.

According to Pat, the use of pure essential oils are a beautiful and effective way to “create a calm space” and to help ground the mother-to-be for a more present and relaxed birthing experience.

She suggests diffusing 1 drop each of clary sage, geranium and lavender for 10 minute intervals at best in the delivery room.

If experiencing discomfort and an aching back try adding a few drops of Roman chamomile and lavender to 30 ml coconut oil and apply to the lower back and legs.

Get your partner enrolled in helping you through contractions by applying the blend. Or add 1 drop of lavender to a wet face washer and apply to the forehead and back of the neck between contractions, avoiding the eye area of course.

Two of Pat’s stand-out essential oil recipes include:

Enjoy a Refreshing room spray to brighten the spirit

“Add 2 drops each of peppermint and lemon to 15ml apple cider vinegar and 80 ml distilled water. Transfer to a spray bottle. Shake well before each use and spray at intervals.”

Create a personalised essential oil blend

Once you are home with your precious bundle and feeling the post-natal blues, creat your own personalised essential oil blend by “adding 20 drops each of bergamot and lavender plus 10 drops each of frankincense, geranium, mandarin, neroli and petitgrain to a 50 ml dark glass bottle with a dropper cap” she says.

“Add 3-6 drops to the water in your diffuser or add 3 drops to 1 tablespoon of jojoba oil and either massage onto shoulders, wrists and the back of the neck or add mixture to warm bath water for a calming soak. Swirl to disperse oils into water and soak for 10 minutes.”

Massaging with a blend of essential oils can help to soothe aches and pains during labour.

“Although research supports the use of essential oils during pregnancy, safe practice during this time is crucial,” says Pat.

“Never increase or change expert recommendations. And only use essential oils if you are healthy and not experiencing any pregnancy or birthing complications. She recommends you consult a practising aromatherapist for added peace of mind. And above all else, to always choose authentic essential oils from a trusted supplier.”

Pat also says to familiarise yourself with the general list of essential oils which are best avoided during pregnancy.

“Do not start using oils during pregnancy that you have never used before without expert advice.”

Some of Pat’s favourites for the birthing process include, “Clary sage (She cautions having a midwife or nurse on hand when using this oil), geranium, mandarin and rose help to strengthen contractions. Roman chamomile, lavender and sandalwood are calming and relaxing while lemon and peppermint are cooling and help freshen the room. Frankincense helps allay fears.”

Use essential oils to create a comforting environment for welcoming your new arrival.

For a more detailed look at motherhood and pregnancy check out Pat’s book, A Scented Life. Apart from its beauty, the book is filled with recipes to comfort you when you are stressed, pick you up when you are tired, improve your concentration levels when you are struggling to think, promote restful sleep and enhance mindful practice.

It’s ideal if you are just starting out or want to enhance your aromatherapy practice.

Note: Although clary sage is contraindicated during pregnancy, it can be introduced once contractions have commenced and providing there is a mid-wife or nurse present. Remember that oils pass through the skin and can affect your baby too, be cautions.)
