The dry skin saviour suitable for all ages, including babies.

A baby’s skin is so much more delicate than an adult’s skin because it is thinner, more fragile and more sensitive.

Because of its fragility, parents need to take extra care when it comes to looking after their little one’s skin because some baby skincare products, clothing and detergents can cause skin irritation, dryness and rashes.

As a baby’s gentle, soft skin is up to five times thinner than an adults, it absorbs products more quickly and also reacts more sensitively. Your baby’s skin-barrier function continues to develop during the first year of their life.

Choosing the right products to cleanse and moisturise your baby’s skin barrier will help prevent skin problems in the future.

Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, affects one in every five children under the age of two. It can also occur in older children and adults, but usually improves with age. The skin in people with eczema is different to the skin in people who do not have eczema.

For some babies, eczema appears as an itchy rash, while others may experience weeping sores and scaly skin.

Eczema can be inherited, caused by an allergy (atopic eczema) or due to a combination of the two. The most common type is atopic (allergic). It generally runs in families and is often linked with other atopic conditions such as asthma and hay fever. It causes dry, red, itchy and inflamed skin. If your baby scratches, her skin may crack and bleed, leading to infection and weeping sores.

An eczema flare-up may be triggered by an inherited tendency to allergies, being run down, unwell, or drastic changes in temperature (like switching the heater on).

Psoriasis is a skin condition that causes thick, scaly patches on the skin. Psoriasis happens when there’s a lot of inflammation in the skin, which leads to the rapid growth and shedding of skin cells.

There’s no cure for eczema or psoriasis, but there are many treatments that can make the rash go away and reduce symptoms. Your GP may recommend antihistamines, which can ease itching, or steroids (in the form of cream, ointment or medicine) to reduce inflammation and relieve discomfort.

Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, affects one in every five children under the age of two.

When caring for dry skin conditions, The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommends washing with emollients rather than detergents or soaps, as these can increase water loss from the skin.

Emollients are very effective moisturisers that soothe, smooth and hydrate the skin, helping to keep it moist and flexible so that it doesn’t itch as much.

Emollients are the first treatment for all dry skin conditions. They come in a range of different formats (creams, lotions, ointments, skin cleansers and bath additives) and should be used generously and frequently.

Regular use of an emollient, even when the skin has improved, will relieve the symptoms of dry skin and help provide a protective barrier. Using a combination of emollients can reduce the number of flare-ups and give effective results.

The Epaderm range is available as a cream and an ointment, specially developed for the management of dry skin conditions, including eczema and psoriasis.

Using Epaderm as a skin cleanser helps ensure that dry skin can be properly washed without losing additional moisture, or having to deal with the problems that common soap additives might produce.
