Red Wiggle Caterina Mete opens up about life with Dolly and Gigi and the surprising Wiggle her girls love most.

If anyone knows that the best things in life are worth waiting for, it’s Caterina Mete.

The Red Wiggle began her IVF journey at 37, and after a long and challenging road, including egg freezing and the help of an anonymous donor, she welcomed her twin daughters Dolly and Gigi in June 2024 at age 43.

Now, as the girls prepare to hit that big second birthday milestone, Caterina is soaking up every moment, from their very different little personalities emerging, to at-home dance parties, to the fact that they’ve both somehow decided Lachy is their favourite Wiggle (sorry, Mum!).

We sat down with Caterina to talk twin toddler chaos, life on tour with The Wiggles and why she believes the best part of motherhood is still to come.

How are you feeling heading into Dolly and Gigi’s second birthday?

I still can’t believe they will be two next month! Their birthday actually falls on one of the days we are doing shows in Melbourne! So we will be having a Wiggly birthday party at the show no doubt, I’m sure there will be some cake and lots of music.

People always say “double the love, double the chaos”… how accurate is that really in your house right now?

It truly is accurate! There are moments when they both come up to me and give me a big hug and it is the most wonderful feeling ever and then on the other side of that we have double of the chaos or mess! Dolly might be in her room playing and putting blocks everywhere and then Gigi might be in the lounge doing the same thing!

Are Dolly and Gigi already showing very different little personalities, or are they still pretty synced-up as twins?

They definitely have different personalities, Dolly is very motherly and loves getting her dolls and feeding them or pushing them in a pram, when Gigi is crying Dolly always goes up to her and gives her hug and say’s ‘it’s ok’, it is so sweet! Gigi loves drawing and playing with balls, she is actually really funny and always says ‘Gigi’s funny’

What do the girls think when they see you in full Wiggles mode? Are they in awe, or is it very much just “that’s mum at work”?

They know Mummy is a Wiggle and goes to work, they have just started saying ‘Mummy goes to work to buy food’. They know how to say Caterina which is super adorable! I did ask them who their favourite Wiggle was and they both love Lachy

Do they try to join in when they see you singing and performing?

They absolutely love singing and dancing, they have already started dance classes! We have little dance parties at home all the time.  I like introducing them to various styles of music, from Elvis to the Bee Gees and even Frank Sinatra (they like to sing New York, New York).

Do they have any favourite Wiggles songs yet?

Their favourite songs at the moment are Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star and Hop Little Bunnies. I also just showed them our new song Sparkle which has just been released, and they loved it too!

The Dorothy the Dinosaur Tonie launched earlier this year. What do the girls love most about it and their Toniebox?

The girls love the Toniebox! Every morning I ask them to put some music on before I change their nappies and its wonderful to see how easy it is for them to use the Toniebox. They can easily choose which Tonie they want to listen and dance along.

Do you bring the girls on the road with you when you’re touring with The Wiggles?

The girls do come along sometimes which is so lovely. Growing up in The Wiggles world is so special, they get to hear live music and see shows all the time. They have many Wiggly aunts and uncles, we are like one big family! The Wiggles YouTube channel is also great on tour, they’re currently enjoying ‘WiggleVision’ which is set in WiggleTown and Eurovision-inspired. It’s lots of fun to watch for them and for me – it’s great for coviewing.

How do you manage to keep some sense of routine when you’re all travelling together?

We do the best we can and don’t really stress about it too much. I have always been a go with the flow type of person and my girls adapt quite easily. Everyday is different but we make it work.

And as they turn two, what are you most excited to see or experience next in this stage of their little lives?

I love how much they are talking now and can’t wait to hear their language develop further. So many people have told me between 2 – 3 years are the best years, so I’m looking forward to experiencing that with them.
