The Bluey Movie trailer has dropped and parents have big feelings about it: “You’ve got 12 months to change this back”

The trailer for The Bluey Movie has finally dropped, and while there’s plenty of excitement around seeing everyone’s favourite Blue Heeler on the big screen, parents and fans are divided over one thing: the animation.

Created by Joe Brumm and produced by Brisbane-based Ludo Studio, Bluey first premiered on ABC Kids in 2018. Since then, the beloved Aussie series has become a global hit, winning a stack of awards along the way. Now, Bluey, Bingo, Bandit and Chilli are heading to the big screen for a feature-length adventure.

But there’s one pretty big change fans have noticed. The movie swaps the familiar 2D animation for a 3D look, and it’s already proving a little divisive. Some fans aren’t convinced by the change, while others are happy to wait and see what the movie has in store.

Bluey movie backlash

And plenty of fans have made their feelings known. One wrote, “This is going down as one of the most inexplicably dumb creative decisions in animation history. Bluey’s animation is timeless and gorgeous. You’ve ruined something that’s perfect as it was.”

Another questioned the reasoning behind the switch: “While I’m actually looking forward to this, I got to ask why the art style change. The 3D looks better than the supposed leaks, but the original art style is iconic, so why alter it?”

Others were even more blunt. “Temu Bluey. Like whyyyyyy did they change the animation style??” read one comment, while another gave the studio an ultimatum: “You’ve got 12 months to change this back to the regular 2D Bluey animation style, or I’m not spending money to see it in theaters.”

One parent raised a concern that hit harder than the rest, sharing how the change has affected their daughter directly.

“You guys are ruining this for special needs kids. My 5 year old daughter has been excited for this. This has been her comfort show inces she was a baby. Just showed her the preview and she’s absolutely terrified. She said she’s sared of how they look and now doesn’t want to go see it anymore. Please change this to 2D you have an entire year to change it back. This is going to upset so many kiddos out there with similar disabilities or sensory disorders.”

And then there’s the simplest ask of all: “All we wanted was a 90 minute long episode on a movie screen.”

Some fans love the new look

Not everyone is upset over the new animation style. “In 3D? And it actually looks good? Highest grossing movie of 2027, I’m calling it now,” one fan predicted.

Another said their kids aren’t fussed either way: “My kids recongize Bluey no matter what form. I think the animation is adorable.” One more added, “Hot take, I honestly thing they look better and cuter in 3D.”

What we know about the movie so far
