Mums reveal the easiest way to clean flyscreens PLUS 10 other uses for the product

Once you try it, you'll never do it any other way!

Families in Australia swear by their flyscreen to keep the flying nasties out, but they can be a pain to clean. Well, not any more!

In the increasingly popular Facebook group, Mums Who Clean (MWC), a cheap and effective hack for cleaning flyscreens has taken off with parents swearing they’ll never do it a different way.

And the product? A humble can of WD-40, a lubricant commonly used for cleaning bikes, fixing squeaky hinges and so SO much more.

Georgie, a mum-of-two from Queensland, started the post by thanking another MWC for sharing the WD-40 tip before sharing her before and after photos.

The reactions ranged from amazement to disbelief.

“I can’t believe it, I need to try this! Thank you for giving me an excuse to go to Bunnings,” one mum wrote.

Others weren’t convinced: “This can’t be real!” said one, while another said “Where’s the door frame gone?” This prompted the poster to share another snap where the frame was visible.

It couldn’t be easier. Simply spray WD-40 onto a Chux and wipe the screen. Hey, presto!

“So great! although I hope people don’t walk straight into it now because it’s so clean,” laughed one mum.

One poster said to make sure don’t try to wash the cloth after, and throw it away instead, while another said to remove the screens and clean them away from the house, if possible because “it stinks”.

The poster shared a second image of the clean screen as some people thought the photo was of an open door.

10 life-changing* WD-40 hacks

WD-40 is one of the most versatile products for your home and family. Here are 10 hacks to keep in mind!

  1. Sticky fingers? If you’re crafting with your kids or fixing something with superglue and get it on your fingers, WD-40 is your friend. Spray a little on hands and then rub them together to get rid of the sticky mess.
  2. Rainy days… Waterproof the tops and sides of your kids’ shoes (and your own!) with a spray of you know what. Don’t do the bottom or you’ll find yourself slip sliding away!
  3. Creative kids. Most households have ‘creative’ kids who accidentally draw on the walls with their crayons and textas… Spray WD-40 on the wall and wipe away with a clean cloth.
  4. Paint scrape. Remove paint scrapes from your car with… WD-40. Spray and wipe with a clean cloth.
  5. Chewing gum in hair. Spray, comb through, wash, done!
  6. Stiff zip? Spray the teeth then open and close a few times to spread the lubricant around.
  7. Sticky residue. If you use self-adhesive wall hooks, they don’t always come off cleanly. You know what to wipe it with…
  8. Hair dye stains. Colouring your hair at home can leave you with stained towels. Spray the area and rub it in before putting it on a hot wash cycle.
  9. Greasy hands. When checking the oil on your car, or similar, it’s easy to remove any oily mess with a quick spray. Wipe your hands with paper towel before washing in soap and water.
  10. Paint on leather. Ruined your leather lounge with a paint spill? Spray the damage and then dry with a clean rag.

One poster joked, “It’s a safety hazard if you can’t see the door. Think of it as safety dust!”
